The narrow trails that visitors now describe as “epic singletrack” were simply our roads. They connected one Amazigh family to another. They led to walnut groves, apple orchards, mountain pastures, hidden springs and neighboring villages where relatives gathered for weddings, harvest celebrations and Friday markets.

When I was a child, I never imagined people would travel thousands of kilometers just to ride these trails.

To me, this landscape wasn’t an adventure.

It was home.

Every morning began the same way.

Before the first sunlight reached our valley, my mother was already baking bread in the clay oven. The smell of olive wood smoke drifted through the village while the mountains were still wrapped in darkness. Somewhere above us, shepherds had already started climbing toward the high pastures with their goats and sheep. Roosters echoed from one hillside to another, and cold mountain air flowed through the narrow streets built from stone and earth.

This was everyday life.

There were no hotels.

There were no mountain bike tours.

There were no visitors carrying cameras.

Only families living as generations before them had lived.

The Atlas Mountains taught us everything before school ever did.

They taught patience.

Respect.

Responsibility.

Community.

They taught us that nature always has the final word.

If heavy snow blocked the mountain pass, everyone waited.

If spring rains destroyed a trail, the whole village rebuilt it together.

If a traveler arrived at sunset after walking all day, nobody asked where he came from before offering tea.

Hospitality wasn’t something we learned.

It was simply who we were.

Years later, when I began guiding mountain bikers through Morocco, I realized something remarkable.

The places I had always considered ordinary were extraordinary to everyone else.

Visitors stopped every few kilometers to photograph landscapes that I had walked past since childhood.

They stared in silence at valleys where I had played football with friends.

They stood amazed by villages where my grandparents still lived.

One guest looked around after reaching a mountain pass above Imlil and quietly said,

“I don’t understand why more people don’t know about this place.”

I smiled.

That is exactly what makes Morocco so special.

Many countries have mountains.

Many countries have deserts.

Many countries have beautiful cycling.

But very few offer something deeper.

Morocco tells stories.

Every valley has one.

Every mountain pass has one.

Every village has one.

The bicycle simply allows you to hear them.

<hr class="wp-block-separator Mountains a shoot from one of the tours that Lahcen lead

People often search online for the best places to cycle in Morocco, expecting one answer.

There isn’t one.

Morocco cannot be understood as a single destination.

It is a collection of landscapes, climates, traditions and cultures that somehow exist within the borders of one country.

In a single week you can leave the busy streets of Marrakech, climb above 2,500 meters into the High Atlas Mountains, descend through green valleys filled with walnut and cherry trees, cross rocky desert plateaus, sleep beneath the stars in the Sahara and finish beside the Atlantic Ocean listening to waves crash against ancient fishing ports.

Every region feels like another country.

That diversity is what makes cycling in Morocco unlike anywhere else in the world.

You don’t simply change scenery.

You change worlds.

One day your ride passes through cedar forests where Barbary macaques jump between ancient trees.

The next morning you pedal through red rock canyons that seem more like another planet than North Africa.

Then suddenly you’re climbing mountain roads where snow still covers the peaks while temperatures in the desert below exceed thirty degrees.

Visitors often ask me,

“Which part of Morocco is your favorite?”

I never answer.

It would be like asking a father to choose between his children.

Each region has its own personality.

The High Atlas teaches humility.

The Sahara teaches silence.

The Anti-Atlas teaches solitude.

The Atlantic coast teaches patience.

Together they create something no other cycling destination can offer.

<hr class="wp-block-separator Own Language

One of the biggest misconceptions visitors have is believing that Morocco has “bike trails.”

We don’t.

At least not in the modern sense.

The routes we ride today were never built for recreation.

Many are centuries old.

Some are probably much older.

Long before suspension forks, GPS computers or carbon bicycles existed, these paths carried salt caravans across the mountains.

Merchants walked them with mules loaded with spices, wool and grain.

Families crossed them during harvest season.

Children walked them to school.

Imams followed them from village to village.

Shepherds still use them every single day.

When your tires roll across these stones, you are not riding a trail built for cyclists.

You are following history.

That changes everything.

Unlike purpose-built bike parks, Morocco feels alive.

You share the trail with shepherds.

You stop for donkeys carrying firewood.

You greet women returning from the fields with baskets balanced effortlessly above their heads.

You hear children laughing before you see them.

Life continues exactly as it always has.

The bicycle simply becomes another traveler passing through.

That authenticity cannot be manufactured.

It cannot be copied.

It cannot be built.

It already exists.

The Mountains Have Their Own before answering.

The mountains are never difficult.

They are honest.

If you respect them, they reward you in ways that no photograph can ever capture. If you underestimate them, they remind you that nature has never cared how expensive your bicycle is or how many kilometers you have ridden in other countries.

Growing up here taught us to understand the rhythm of the mountains.

We never looked at weather forecasts.

We looked at the sky.

We knew from the movement of clouds whether rain would arrive before sunset.

We knew which valleys kept snow until May.

We knew where water would still be flowing at the end of summer.

Our grandparents taught us these things because they were necessary for everyday life.

Today, those same lessons help me guide cyclists safely across some of the most spectacular terrain in North Africa.

Many visitors arrive believing Morocco is only desert.

I understand why.

Most postcards show camels walking across golden dunes.

But those images tell only one chapter of a much larger story.

The Morocco I know begins thousands of meters above sea level.

It begins where rivers are born.

Where ancient walnut trees shade stone villages.

Where shepherds whistle to their dogs across enormous valleys.

Where every climb reveals another landscape completely different from the one behind you.

Sometimes I stop the group without saying anything.

Not because someone has a mechanical problem.

Not because we need a break.

Simply because I know what waits around the next corner.

We roll our bikes to the edge of the trail.

Nobody speaks.

Below us, terraces climb impossible mountainsides like giant staircases carved into the earth centuries ago.

Small houses built from local stone seem to grow naturally from the mountains themselves.

Smoke rises from rooftops.

Children wave from rooftops when they hear our freewheels clicking down the trail.

Far away, the snow-covered summit of Toubkal watches over everything.

No matter how many times I stand there, I still feel the same emotion I felt as a child.

These mountains never become ordinary.

Riding Is the Slowest Way to Truly See Morocco

The quickest route.

The shortest delay.

Morocco teaches something completely different.

Here, the slower you travel, the richer the experience becomes.

That is why I believe a bicycle is the perfect way to discover this country.

When you travel by bus, villages disappear through the window before you even notice them.

In a car, you drive over rivers without hearing them.

You pass orchards without smelling their blossoms.

You miss the conversations happening beside the road.

On a bicycle, everything changes.

You become part of the landscape instead of simply passing through it.

People greet you because they can.

Children run beside you because they are curious.

Old men invite you to drink tea because you arrived at the pace of a traveler rather than a tourist.

One afternoon, after climbing for several hours above the Azzaden Valley, we stopped near a small village where an elderly man was repairing a stone wall.

He smiled as we approached.

Without speaking English and without us speaking much Tamazight beyond greetings, he pointed toward his home.

A few minutes later we were sitting on colourful rugs drinking mint tea while his wife brought freshly baked bread, olive oil and local honey.

There was no restaurant.

No menu.

No payment.

Only generosity.

One of the guests quietly said to me,

“This would never happen where I live.”

That sentence stayed with me.

<p child grew up surrounded by mountains like these.

I thought every village had waterfalls hidden behind walnut forests.

I assumed everyone climbed mountain passes to visit family.

It wasn’t until I began guiding riders from Europe that I understood how unique my home really was.

I remember my very first international group.

They had travelled from different countries, bringing beautiful bicycles worth more than many of the cars in our villages.

At first they were excited about the riding.

They talked about gears, suspension, tyre pressure and GPS routes.

Then something changed.

On the second day we reached a remote Amazigh village where children were playing football on a dusty field.

The game stopped immediately.

Within seconds every child surrounded the cyclists, laughing, asking questions, wanting to touch the bicycles.

One little boy pointed at a rider’s helmet and asked if he could try it on.

The rider carefully placed it on his head.

The helmet covered almost his entire face.

Everyone laughed.

Including the boy.

Nearly fifteen years later, I cannot remember what bike that rider used.

I cannot remember his clothing.

I cannot remember his average speed.

But I still remember the smile on that child’s face.

That is what people carry home from Morocco.

Not statistics.

Stories.

Every Valley Has Its one mountain range.

To us, every valley has its own personality.

Imlil is energetic.

It is where many adventures begin.

Before sunrise, guides prepare equipment while mule drivers organise supplies for hikers climbing Toubkal.

There is excitement in the air.

Ourika feels different.

The river is never far away.

Fruit trees cover the valley, and every spring the hillsides become green after months of winter.

Families gather beside the water on weekends while cafés fill with the sound of conversation.

Azzaden is quieter.

It asks you to slow down.

Many visitors tell me this valley feels untouched by time.

Stone villages cling to steep mountainsides exactly as they have for generations.

Ouirgane is softer.

Olive groves replace rocky slopes.

The pace becomes gentler.

Even the light seems warmer in the late afternoon.

Then there is Amizmiz.

The meeting point between mountains and plains.

The landscape begins changing again, preparing you for another chapter of Morocco.

This is why I always tell visitors that one ride is never enough.

Every valley tells a different story.

Every mountain pass opens another book.

And no matter how many times I ride them, I always discover something new.

The road continues.

So does the story.

Because in Morocco, the destination has never been the most interesting part of the journey. It has always been everything that happens between the first pedal stroke in the morning and the final glass of mint tea shared beneath a sky filled with stars.

Every Ride Leaves a Story Behind

People often ask me what the best cycling route in Morocco is.

After years of guiding riders across the Atlas Mountains, through the valleys of Ourika and Ouirgane, over the high passes of Imlil, and all the way to the golden dunes of the Sahara Desert, I always give the same answer.

There isn’t one.

The best route is the one that changes you.

Some visitors arrive looking for the best mountain biking in Morocco, hoping to conquer legendary climbs and technical singletrack. Others dream of quiet gravel cycling in Morocco, where endless dirt roads disappear into the horizon. Many come searching for an unforgettable cycling holiday in Morocco, eager to discover landscapes they have only seen in photographs.

What they all discover is something much greater than a bike ride.

They discover that Morocco is a country best experienced at the rhythm of a bicycle.

A rhythm slow enough to hear the river flowing through a hidden valley, to smell fresh bread baking in an Amazigh village, to stop for mint tea with a family you’ve only just met, and to watch the evening light transform the High Atlas Mountains into shades of gold and red.

These are the moments that no GPS can record and no photograph can fully capture.

As an Amazigh guide born and raised in these mountains, I have had the privilege of sharing this journey with thousands of cyclists from every corner of the world. Many arrived as guests. Many returned as friends. Some have come back year after year, not only to ride the trails again, but to reconnect with the people and places that became part of their own story.

That is what cycling in Morocco truly means.

It is not simply about reaching the highest pass, completing the longest route, or adding another destination to your travel list.

It is about discovering a way of life that has remained deeply connected to the land for centuries. It is about following ancient paths that once carried caravans, shepherds, and families long before bicycles ever existed. It is about realizing that every valley has its own traditions, every mountain has its own character, and every ride offers an opportunity to understand Morocco a little more deeply.

Whether you are planning your first Morocco bike tour, searching for the finest Atlas Mountains cycling adventure, exploring gravel bike routes in Morocco, or preparing for an epic mountain bike holiday in Morocco, I hope this story has shown you that our country offers far more than beautiful scenery.

It offers genuine human connections.

It offers adventure with purpose.

It offers memories that stay with you long after the journey ends.

The mountains are still here.

The ancient trails are waiting.

The tea is always warm.

And whenever you are ready to discover the real Morocco, we will be here to welcome you—not as tourists, but as fellow riders sharing the same road.

Because in the end, the greatest journeys are never measured in kilometres.

They are measured in the stories we carry home.

More stories: Blog

Meduim

mtbinmoroccopayment@gmail.comEdit Profile I Was Born Where Your Adventure Begins – Cycling Morocco Cycling Morocco : People often ask me when I started mountain biking.
