2 Day Gravel Cycling in The Atlas Mountains

The adventure begins with an early morning pickup or direct start from your accommodation in Marrakech. Riders roll out on quiet secondary roads heading northeast, leaving the bustling city behind and entering the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Within 20–30 kilometers, tarmac transitions into mixed gravel and hard-packed tracks, giving a true gravel bike experience while avoiding busy roads.

Climbing gradually, the route follows rural connector roads and small gravel shortcuts toward Imlil, providing riders with stunning valley views, scattered Berber homes, and terraced farmland. Upon arrival in Imlil, the team pauses for a short rest and hydration stop, adjusting bikes and reviewing the next section.

The ride continues with a scenic loop through Imnane Valley, one of the quieter mountain valleys less frequented by tourists. Here, you traverse narrow village lanes, gently rolling farmland tracks, and riverside paths flanked by walnut and apple orchards. The gravel surfaces are technically varied some short climbs with loose stones, smooth flowing descents, and compacted dirt stretches ideal for riders on 40–50mm tires.

Along the route, your guide shares insights into local Berber culture, agricultural techniques, and mountain life. Stops for photos and water are included at scenic viewpoints overlooking terraced fields and mountain ridges. After completing the loop, riders return to Imlil for an overnight stay in a traditional guesthouse or mountain lodge. The evening offers a warm dinner of Moroccan specialties, rest, and preparation for the following day’s high plateau adventure.

Day two begins with breakfast in Imlil before setting off toward the Kik Plateau. The morning section involves steady climbs along gravel roads and mule tracks, gradually rising to a high-altitude plateau with panoramic views over the surrounding valleys. This stage is ideal for warming up the legs and enjoying uninterrupted mountain scenery.

Once on the plateau, riders experience rolling terrain with open gravel tracks, connecting small hamlets and isolated Berber settlements. The plateau’s wide-open vistas offer exceptional photo opportunities and a sense of riding through a remote, untamed landscape. Riders encounter mixed terrain: loose gravel, hard-packed trails, and occasional rocky stretches, challenging technical skills without being overly extreme.

After a mid-route rest and optional snack, the tour descends gradually into the fertile valley surrounding Takerkoust. The descent includes a combination of fast-flowing tracks and smooth secondary roads, allowing riders to enjoy flowing lines and appreciate the contrast between highland and lowland scenery.

The ride ends near Takerkoust Lake, where the bikes are loaded onto the support vehicle. Riders are then transferred back to Marrakech, arriving in the late afternoon.
