About the Berber People

Berbers are an ethnolinguistic group indigenous to North Africa, distributed from the Atlantic Ocean to Egypt, and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Niger River. Historically, they spoke Berber languages, which form the Berber branch of the Afroasiatic family.

Most Berber people live in North Africa, mainly in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. The majority are predominantly Sunni Muslim, though Berber identity encompasses the entire history and geography of North Africa.

Berbers call themselves "Imazighen" (singular: Amazigh), meaning "free people". Some of the most famous historical Berbers include King Masinissa, Saint Augustine of Hippo, and the medieval explorer Ibn Battuta who traveled further than any of his contemporaries.
